Do you use illustrations in your designs?
Chances are, you already do. From website icons and process graphics to social posts and brochures, illustrations quietly support your brand in more ways than you might realise.
Over the past couple of years, we’ve created more bespoke illustrations for our clients – and they’ve quickly become one of my favourite things to work on. They bring personality, warmth and a sense of cohesion that’s hard to achieve any other way.
What Are Illustrations in Design?
In simple terms, they’re visual elements that support your message.
They might explain a process, highlight a feature, add emotion to a layout or simply create a recognisable visual style. Big or small, they play an important role in how polished and cohesive your brand appears.
Why Use Illustrations in Your Brand?
Add warmth – They bring character and feeling into your design.
Create consistency – A recognisable illustration style strengthens brand identity.
Enhance engagement – They draw the eye and encourage people to pause.
Support storytelling – They make ideas easier to understand visually.
Stock vs Bespoke Illustrations
There are plenty of stock illustrations available on platforms like Canva, Adobe and Shutterstock. They’re affordable, quick to access and can work well in the right context.
But they do come with limitations:
Anyone else can use the same design
Customisation is usually limited to colour changes
The overall style can feel generic
Bespoke illustrations, on the other hand:
Are fully personalised to your brand
Reflect your tone and personality
Incorporate your brand elements
Make your visuals instantly recognisable
They require more investment, but they create long-term brand assets that set you apart.
Bringing Your Brand to Life
The difference between stock and bespoke is subtle but powerful. One fills space. The other builds identity.
Branded illustrations add personality, cohesion and storytelling in a way that feels completely yours. And that’s often the detail that elevates a brand from “nice” to truly memorable.
